When the literary world received the news of the death of W.G. Sebald in December 2001, shortly after the publication of his last novel Austerlitz in English translation, friends, fellow-writers and critics were united in their grief and conviction that literature had lost one of its truly exceptional protagonists. One year later this sense of bereavement in the literary community seems even stronger. This volume brings together the papers given at the Institute of Germanic Studies' 'W.G. Sebald Memorial Day' on 31 January 2003.
