Detailed Description

Richard Carwardine, prize-winning Abraham Lincoln biographer sheds light on Lincoln’s Civil War leadership through comparing it with that of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. It has been commonly argued that Lincoln was a better war leader but this study breaks new ground in explaining what that superiority consisted of. The author also argues that Davis was in key ways himself an effective leader and that if Lincoln’s achievement overshadows his then we should see this as a mark of the latter’s qualities than of the deficiencies of the former.
