Detailed Description

This paper examines the upsurge of nationalism in the Bush administration and seeks to understand it in relation to crucial events in the American past. Richard Crockatt argues that American nationalism is a compound of democratic ideology, stemming ultimately from the Revolution and of the assertion of centralised power through military means manifested most obviously in the Civil War. The Civil War and the period of Reconstruction which followed it cemented the notion that democracy could be imposed by force. Crockatt explores the idea that the dynamics of American foreign policy in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries owe much to the dynamics of national growth in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
