This lecture was delivered in the house of Commons to a general audience as the 2007 Simón Bolívar Lecture, organised by the Anglo-Venezuelan Society. The talk reflects on the two centuries that have passed since the cause of Latin American independence became a leading foreign policy issue in London. The relationship has included 'the best of times’ and 'the worst of times’ as has the experience of those Latin Americans distinguished and more modest folk who have lived in London.
