This paper considers the poll of 1997 in the light of Bolivia’s electoral history, particularly since the transition to constitutional rule in 1982. The principal developments in the political landscape are analysed as background to the campaign and results. Finally, brief consideration is given to the implications for Bolivia of the discovery of the remains of Che Guevara between the holding of the poll and the inauguration of General Hugo Banzer as president.
