The advantages and disadvantages of the electoral college have long been the subject of debate in the United States. The debate was renewed with vigour after the 2000 presidential election when the candidate who got the most popular votes lost the election. The arguments are not analysed here so much as studied from an historical perspective. Changes may well be made to the system but Mitchell doubts whether the electoral colleges will be abolished because of the sheer difficulty in amending the Constitution.
