Course Description

In order to meet the Department of Health 2020 targets for expanding the numbers of GPs working in primary care and increase training capacity, the approaches to becoming a GP educator have been revised across London and the South East.  

This new regional training course aims to prepare general practitioners to become GP Trainers, complement learning that will take place within trainer workshops and provide further professional development for GP educators.  

 Eligibility

This course is only available to general practitioners who:

  • wish to apply for approval as a GP Trainer in primary care,
  • achieved MRCGP at least 2 years ago.

Participants are expected to have joined their local trainer workshop by the time the course starts.

Programme Structure

The course is delivered via a blended learning approach consisting of five, face-to-face taught days, five hours of self-directed learning between each course day, and completion of a reflective portfolio. Evidence of completion of all components of the course will be needed as part of the GP Trainer application process

Course Days

The taught days will take place on the following Wednesdays (09:00 hrs-17:00 hrs):

1st November 2017, 6th December 2017, 10th January 2018, 31st January 2018 and 28th February 2018. 

Participants will need to attend all five days to complete the programme.

 

Programme Content

The programme will include: 

  • Facilitating learning in the primary care setting
  • Developing working relationships and creating an environment for learning
  • Developing skills for effective supervision
  • Developing skills for giving and receiving effective feedback
  • Identifying and managing challenges with learners
  • Understanding the principles of assessment
  • Reflecting on practice and development as an educator
  • Introducing the role of evidence, theory and critical thinking in guiding educational practice
  • Guiding and supporting the development of trainees
  • Approaches to inter-professional education and multi-professional teamwork.

The course maps to the seven Areas of the Professional Development Framework for Educators

 Cost: The programme is free of charge however a £500 refundable deposit is required to secure your place and will be refunded once you have completed the course.
